O&G Industries, a nearly century-old construction company headquartered in Connecticut, hosted an intern from the City of Norwich’s Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) at the company’s Putnam High School Renovation project.

O&G’s SYEP intern, Anthony Diaz is an 18 year-old graduate of Norwich Technical High School who studies were focused in carpentry.  “I had studied aspects of residential construction during High School but never had an opportunity to work on a commercial construction project.  This internship provided me with hands-on experience working on a major project that I wouldn’t have gotten without the Summer Youth Employment Program” stated Diaz.  “The opportunity is amazing in getting to see a High School built and it has progress so much during my time here.”

Funded by the State of Connecticut and the Eastern Workforce Investment Board, the City of Norwich’s Summer Youth Employment Program placed 120 youth ranging in age from 14 to 21.  The youth work 15 to 25 hours per week for regional employers with their salaries paid by the program.

“The youth gain the benefit of real world employment experience and receive additional mentoring in presentation skills, resume and interview preparation beyond the work site” stated Patricia Dixe, Program Coordinator for the City of Norwich Youth and Family Services.  “Anthony will be leaps ahead of his peers when he enters school this fall.  He’s gained skills in Construction Management and experienced firsthand what it’s like for the trade contractors to work side-by-side in the real world.  You just don’t get that experience in a classroom.”

“During the course of internship he has become much more independent.  He doesn’t ask me as many questions.  Now he tries to work through a problem to come up with a solution on his own before coming to me with questions stated Gina Palano, O&G Project Engineer as well as Diaz’s Supervisor and SYEP Mentor.

Diaz is planning to attend New England Technical School in the fall with a concentration in Architectural Engineering.
