The eighth session of O&G Builds at Norton Elementary School in Cheshire gave students a hands-on look at the systems that keep their school comfortable, functional, and finished, including plumbing, HVAC, and flooring.
Project partners from Ferguson Contractors and BK Floors (Barall & Konover) kicked off the session in the project trailer, introducing their trades and explaining how their work fits into the overall building. Ferguson’s team walked students through how plumbing and HVAC systems are designed and installed, from pipes and ductwork hidden behind walls and ceilings to the role of plumbing traps in preventing odors.
BK Floors followed with an overview of the flooring process, from preparing subfloors to installing materials and completing finishing details. They also shared that their work includes wall tile installation, helping bring durability and design to the building’s interior.

Out on the jobsite, students put their learning into action. With Ferguson’s team, they crimped pipe fittings and tested their work for leaks, gaining a firsthand appreciation for the precision required. They also watched a step-by-step ductwork assembly demonstration. With BK Floors, students tried laying tile themselves, learning how careful placement and alignment contribute to a finished space. Throughout the activities, both teams reinforced the importance of safety, attention to detail, and teamwork.

The day also featured a special visit from retired O&G Dispatcher Mike Ciarlo, who spent 20 years at South Main. Known and well-loved across the organization, Mike returned to support his nephew Jax (pictured below), a student participating in the program, creating a meaningful connection across generations of the O&G community.

Session eight of O&G Builds once again highlighted the value of strong partnerships and hands-on learning, giving students a deeper appreciation for the skilled trades that make their new school possible. We are grateful to our O&G team and project partners for taking time out of their busy schedules to share their expertise and inspire the next generation.
