How long have you been in the construction industry?
I am new to construction! I just recently started my apprenticeship in October 2024.
How did you get started in the construction industry?
I first started in a small program that was offered for youth. I chose carpentry because I always found it interesting. I would always watch women building their own things for their own homes, and I decided I wanted to become just like them and be independent in the area.
What skills do you think are essential for success in the construction field, and how have you developed them?
Learning one day at a time. Knowing that you won’t understand certain things, but to always have an open mind and try and understand things so that it can be easy for you in the construction field.
What’s your advice for other women looking to enter the construction industry?
As women, we might feel intimidated seeing mostly men in the field, but it is an honor to be surrounded by knowledgeable men who have learned construction and can teach us with patience. This allows us to become independent in this area. By learning their skills, we can be mentally strong and prepared. It’s okay for women not to be as fast or strong; what matters is helping one another and not doing it alone. Always ask for help if you need it.
What’s most exciting/fulfilling about your role?
For me it is to be able to help when they need me. But to also be able to learn and be guided by my partners at work and using that knowledge when the time is right. I also enjoy learning how to handle different tools.
How does the company support you in your role?
I really love how they have the patience to teach me, given my lack of experience. My coworkers take time to teach me how to use certain tools, read a measuring tape, and teach me certain skills to help me navigate the job.
