Marilyn Plaskiewicz’s journey in volunteerism began in 1997, inspired by a moving speech from George Salpietro, Executive Director of the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation. That moment ignited a passion for service that has flourished for more than two decades.
Marilyn proudly made history as the first female President of the Torrington Lions Club, guiding the organization through two terms, including its 75th Anniversary celebration. Her leadership earned her the prestigious Melvin Jones Award—the highest honor granted by Lions Club International. One of her proudest achievements was helping raise $25,000 to sponsor a Fidelco guide dog, who was later paired with a young adult in Torrington, transforming that individual’s life.
But Marilyn’s spirit of service doesn’t stop with the Lions. She has contributed to a wide range of community organizations, all driven by her deep desire to make a difference. In the arts, she serves as Secretary on the Board of Directors for Goshen Players, and also volunteers at KidsPlay Children’s Museum in Torrington, where she delights in watching young minds learn and grow.
Marilyn has also championed health-related causes, lending her time and energy to fundraising efforts for both the House of Hope, which pioneers new paths for autism, and the National MS Society. These efforts, she says, have brought her both personal fulfillment and the privilege of supporting those facing difficult challenges.
Throughout her journey, Marilyn has been bolstered by the support of her friends, coworkers, and generous local businesses—including O&G Industries, Inc., whose contributions have helped bring her volunteer initiatives to life.
One of Marilyn’s most personal and long-standing contributions has been through song. For over 40 years, she has honored her community and its heroes by singing the National Anthem at remembrance events and ceremonies, including Torrington’s Memorial Day service and the annual 9/11 memorial hosted by the Torrington Fire Department.
Looking ahead, Marilyn hopes to expand her volunteer efforts to include fundraising for local animal rescue organizations. She is humbled by the impact she has made so far and deeply grateful to the community that has supported her efforts every step of the way.
