Volunteer Spotlight, Lydia Babbitt: A Life of Service, Onstage and Off

For Lydia Babbitt, volunteering isn’t just a way to give back—it’s a way of life rooted in passion, purpose, and community. Whether she’s transforming into a character onstage or helping provide food and shelter to those in need, Lydia brings heart and humor to everything she does.

Lydia’s connection to the Goshen Players theater group began quite literally at birth. Raised in a family deeply involved in local theatre, her love for the arts was natural and immediate. Over the years, she’s taken on numerous roles in the group, helping produce high-quality performances that entertain and challenge audiences in Northwest Connecticut. “Pretending to be someone else is super fun,” Lydia laughs, “especially when you can get away with all sorts of bad behavior you’d never try at work!”

But it’s more than fun—Lydia sees theater as a vital force for education and social impact. Her dedication to the 76-year-old Goshen Players ensures that creative expression continues to thrive for future generations.

Lydia’s spirit of service also runs deep through her involvement with Trinity Episcopal Church in Torrington. Since 2004, she and her husband have been active members, drawn to the church’s commitment to action over words. “They walk the walk,” Lydia says. Through Trinity, she’s helped support critical outreach programs, including a soup kitchen and Torrington’s only emergency cold weather shelter. One of her proudest moments? Leading a capital campaign that raised over $500,000 to replace the church’s roof, ensuring the continuation of its mission for years to come.

Through it all, Lydia credits her volunteerism with shaping her leadership skills, communication, and empathy. “You learn a lot working with people who are different from you,” she says. “And the rewards are real—you see lives being changed.”

She’s quick to note that her company, O&G, has been an enthusiastic supporter of her work, both through sponsorship and personal encouragement. “They’ve donated to both Goshen Players and the church programs,” she shares. “The support from leadership means the world.”

Lydia’s story is proof that when you follow your passions and stay committed to helping others, amazing things can happen—onstage, at church, and everywhere in between.

Her advice? “Get involved! You never know what rewards might await. I even met my husband in the back row of a choreography rehearsal—neither of us can tap dance!”
