True Gold Spotlight: Mike Gath, Project Executive, Healthcare Group

We’re proud to shine the True Gold spotlight on Mike Gath, a dedicated and driven Project Executive in our Healthcare Group. Mike’s journey in construction began right after high school, following in the footsteps of his father as a union carpenter. His hands-on experience and self-taught expertise have shaped him into the leader he is today.

Mike’s path with O&G started back in July 2014, and after a brief break, he returned in November 2021, bringing with him a wealth of experience and a passion for the complex and rewarding world of healthcare construction.

When asked what he finds most interesting about his role, Mike shared, “Seeing how so many separate systems in a hospital work (or don’t work) together and how those affect the lives and outcomes of patients.” It’s this perspective that fuels his attention to detail and commitment to quality, because in healthcare construction, the stakes are higher.

One of Mike’s proudest achievements is his ability to teach himself much of what he practices daily. “I’ve had some really great mentors along the way, but I’ve never been professionally trained in construction management,” he says. His story is a testament to the power of initiative and continuous learning.

When it comes to success in construction, Mike emphasizes one skill above all: listening. “It’s easy to get lost in your own ideas and not realize the genius around you. Listen and don’t just wait for your turn to speak.” It’s a piece of advice that has served him well and one he offers to anyone entering the field.

Mike finds his greatest motivation in his family, and it’s this foundation that keeps him grounded and focused. His advice for those considering a construction career? “Do it. The opportunities and paths are endless, and the work is rewarding. It’s going to be tough—but anything worth doing usually is.”

He also lets us in on a lesser-known truth about the job: “Nobody ever told me this, but you need to be part fortune teller and part mind reader to do it successfully.” A unique challenge that keeps each day interesting!

At O&G, Mike values the team-oriented culture, where support is just a phone call away. “There is never any judgment—just an attitude of ‘how can we help?’ It truly is a team attitude,” he says.

Outside of work, Mike enjoys getting his hands dirty—literally. Whether he’s building something or working in the yard, he finds joy in being outdoors and operating equipment. It’s clear that no matter the setting, Mike’s passion for building and problem-solving shines through.

We’re proud to have Mike as part of the O&G family. His dedication, insight, and hands-on approach embody the values we hold dear. Thank you, Mike, for all that you do!
