Promotion Spotlight: Joann Bunel Steps into New Role as Claims Manager

We’re excited to shine a spotlight on Joann Bunel, who was recently promoted to Claims Manager in O&G’s Risk Management department at the Main Office. Her new title became official on May 5, 2025, marking an exciting milestone in her 18-year journey with the company.

From Switchboard to Claims Management: A Journey of Growth

Joann’s story at O&G began back in 2007, when she was hired to split her time between two very different roles: switchboard operator and accounts payable clerk. Although she was new to the world of AP, Joann quickly adapted to the fast-paced environment, embracing the challenge with determination and a willingness to learn.

“I had no prior experience, but I quickly adapted and learned a wide range of new skills,” she reflects. “After many years of doing the same job, I decided it was time to challenge myself and learn something new again. Although change is hard, I saw the opening and decided to apply.”

Now, in her new role as Claims Manager, Joann is responsible for overseeing the full life cycle of insurance claims across all O&G divisions and subsidiary companies. That includes general liability, auto, and workers’ compensation claims. She works closely with both internal employees and external insurance adjusters, ensuring that every step of the claims process is handled efficiently and professionally. On top of that, she manages a range of administrative tasks including invoicing, OSHA reporting, and claim documentation in JDE.

Finding Fulfillment Through Growth and Connection

When asked what has been the most rewarding part of her career progression, Joann doesn’t hesitate.

“The opportunity to grow, continuously learn new things, and build meaningful friendships with my coworkers,” she says. “Being able to develop professionally while forming strong connections with others has made this journey truly fulfilling.”

What excites her most about the new role? “The opportunity to learn something entirely new and step outside of my comfort zone,” she shares. For Joann, pushing herself beyond the familiar has always been the key to growth.

A Strong Support System and Lasting Motivation

Joann credits her husband and sons as her biggest supporters and sources of inspiration. “I’ve always had a strong work ethic, but having their encouragement has made all the difference,” she says. “My husband has stood by me through every challenge and transition, giving me the confidence to keep pushing forward.”

But it’s not just about personal growth—it’s about setting an example. “What inspires me the most is knowing that I’m setting an example for our boys, showing them that with hard work, determination, and integrity, you can achieve anything.”

Advice for Others on the Rise

For anyone hoping to grow in their role or move up within the company, Joann offers this advice:

“Don’t be afraid to try something new. It’s easy to stay where you’re comfortable, but growth comes from taking on new challenges. Change can feel scary, but it often leads to new opportunities. Be open to learning, ask questions, and show that you’re willing to grow.”

Life Outside of Work

When she’s not managing complex claims or navigating new responsibilities, Joann recharges by staying grounded. She enjoys yoga classes, taking walks, and spending quality time with family and friends—a balance that helps her stay focused and motivated at work.

Congratulations to Joann on this well-earned promotion and inspiring example of personal and professional growth. We’re proud to have her on the O&G team and look forward to all she will accomplish in this new role.
