October marks Cyber Security Awareness Month, a timely moment to recognize and thank Michael Cioffi, IT Security Manager, for his leadership and expertise. When Michael joined O&G three years ago, he was brought on with a critical mission: to design and lead O&G’s first comprehensive cybersecurity program – an effort that has since become a cornerstone of our operations. Today, thanks to his vision and dedication, cyber awareness and protection are part of our daily culture.
A Career Built on Curiosity and Progress
Michael’s journey into technology began back in the 1980s, when a friend introduced him to the world of personal computers and the now-classic Flight Simulator for the PC Jr. That spark led him to a career path that grew from an entry-level technician to leadership roles, including Director of Technology at Fairfield University, managing data centers on Wall Street, and eventually transitioning into his passion: cybersecurity. Before coming to O&G, Michael built his cyber expertise at Assa Abloy’s AMER group in New Haven.
Protecting O&G Every Day
As IT Security Manager, Michael’s day often begins with monitoring cyber alerts and phishing reports. His work ensures that O&G systems remain resilient and uninterrupted by threats like malware or ransomware. Beyond daily vigilance, he partners closely with our CIO to develop future-proof cyber strategies, protecting both office and field operations.
One of his proudest contributions is this year’s Cyber Security Month initiatives, which he designed to be not only educational but also fun and engaging, bringing an important topic to life for the entire organization.
What Sets Him Apart
Michael’s experience, certifications, and decades in IT give him the ability to create practical, effective solutions. Yet he emphasizes that his motivation comes from the people he works alongside: “Being part of a great team is rewarding on a daily basis.” He also notes the complexity and scale of what IT supports, pointing out that while the team makes it look easy, it is not. “There is a constant level of change and activity going on in all areas of IT.”
A Culture That Stands Out
For Michael, the culture is what makes O&G truly special. He calls it “by far the most practical and personable environment I have witnessed.” He also passes along this advice to those entering the field: “Get your foot in the door, work hard, get stuff done, and add value. Do those three things and you’ll find your way to success.”
Beyond the Firewall
Outside of work, Michael has a few surprising passions: he is a beekeeper, an avid (though modest) guitar player, and a dedicated Yankees fan. His ideal weekend includes family, his dogs, good weather, and, of course, a trip to Yankee Stadium. Thank you, Michael, for your leadership in building and safeguarding O&G’s cybersecurity program. Your expertise ensures that our teams can work confidently and securely every day.
