Accounting & Accounts Payable Intern
Central Connecticut State University, Accounting, Class of 2027
For over a year now, Matt Jacobs has been building hands-on experience across the finance side of O&G. Starting in Accounts Receivable and then transitioning through Accounts Payable and into the Accounting Department, Matt has had the opportunity to gain a well-rounded view of how different teams contribute to the company’s financial operations.
Currently, he’s working on everything from property taxes and financial statements to bank reconciliations, promotions and contributions, and travel and entertainment expenses. He also assists in processing invoices on the AP side. “What excites me most is that even though some of the work can be repetitive, every day brings something new,” he says. “There are always different challenges to face, and that keeps me on my toes and engaged.”
One of the biggest lessons Matt has learned during his time at O&G is that no two days are the same—and that’s exactly what he loves about it. “When I’m assigned something unfamiliar, I really have to focus, but I get to build on what I already know. That’s helped deepen my understanding and confidence.”
Matt credits his growth in large part to the team around him. “Everyone in the accounting department has been incredibly helpful,” he says. “Lindsay Cull has been especially supportive and patient as I’ve taken on more responsibility. And Holly Hunt has given me a lot of reassurance and helped me feel confident in both my career path and in myself.”
A student at Central Connecticut State University majoring in Accounting, Matt is planning to pursue a CPA designation. He says that if it weren’t for this internship, he might not have stuck with accounting. “This experience gave me a sense of accomplishment and purpose,” he explains. “Being able to move through departments and learn their functions helped me gain a strong understanding of what I want to do.”
While he’s more focused on his field than the industry he’ll work in, Matt says O&G has set the bar high when it comes to work culture. “The people here genuinely want you to succeed and are happy to support you. If I do pursue a role in construction long-term, the company would need to have a culture like O&G’s.”
His advice to future interns? “Come in with the mindset that the people you’re working with are glad you’re here. They want to help you learn and succeed.” When he’s not working or studying, Matt enjoys cooking and baking, playing guitar, golfing, and spending time outdoors.
