Healthcare & Industrial Building Group Intern – UConn Health Central Sterile & New Milford Hospital Projects
Roger Williams University, Construction Management, Class of 2027
This summer, Liam Farrell has been diving headfirst into the world of healthcare construction as part of O&G’s team at UConn Health and New Milford Hospital. As a Construction Management major at Roger Williams University, Liam was looking for a hands-on experience in commercial construction—and he’s found just that.
He’s currently supporting two active projects: the Central Sterile renovation at UConn Health and the Breast Imaging Suite at New Milford Hospital. “I’ve never worked on anything of this scale before,” Liam says. “It’s exciting to see how everything comes together behind the scenes.”
One of the biggest takeaways from his time at O&G has been a newfound appreciation for detail and planning. “Even the smallest things are accounted for months in advance,” he says. “I used to think a lot of decisions were made in the field, but now I know how much is actually determined during preconstruction.”
He credits Project Manager Matt Edwards for being a reliable mentor throughout his internship. “He’s always available to help, whether it’s a quick question or a deeper explanation. Having someone like that to learn from has been incredibly valuable.”
Liam says this experience has solidified his interest in a construction career—especially in project management. “One of the best parts has been realizing I don’t need to have everything figured out right now. This role lets me be involved in so many aspects of a project. I’ve been able to split my time between the office and field, which has helped me discover what I enjoy most.”
Prior to O&G, Liam spent last summer as a carpenter’s apprentice with a smaller, residential contractor. Wanting to try something new, he turned to commercial construction. After hearing great things from past interns, he knew O&G was the right next step.
His advice for future interns? “Ask questions. You’re not expected to know everything—that’s why you’re here. Be curious and take every opportunity to learn.”
Outside of the job site, Liam keeps busy as a soccer player at Roger Williams University.
