Intern Spotlight: John Dalakas

Concrete Quality Control Intern
Central Connecticut State University, Construction Management, Class of 2026

This summer, John Dalakas has spent his days on the move—traveling to a wide range of job sites across O&G’s operations, from large-scale building projects to smaller residential work. As a concrete quality control intern, he’s responsible for making sure each pour meets the required specifications, and he’s learned just how fast paced the work can be.

“Speed is everything,” he says. “People don’t wait for you, so you’ve got to be fast and efficient while still getting it right—which can be especially challenging on a hot day after a few jobs in a row.” Despite the challenge, John says the variety of job sites and mix designs has kept the experience exciting and engaging.

Throughout his internship, John has worked side-by-side with his supervisor, Charlie Alberico, Quality Control Engineer. “He’s taught me everything I know about testing,” John says. “He’s been in the industry for a long time, and he always has an answer—even for things outside of concrete. I’ve been with him the whole time, and it’s been a great learning experience.” He also credits Rudy, Jimmy, Joe, Chris, and Jim Maher? for sharing their knowledge and offering support along the way.

John, who is studying Construction Management at Central Connecticut State University, says a future in construction has always been on his radar. “I’ve loved construction since I was a kid. My dad was a civil engineer, and he encouraged me to pursue construction management. I’m not someone who can sit in an office all day—I’m very hands-on, so this kind of work is perfect for me.”

Last summer, John interned with Advance Testing and often worked alongside O&G teams. That experience made a lasting impression. “I knew O&G was involved in a lot of different types of construction, so when the opportunity came up, I knew it would be a great step for me—whether I stayed with the company long-term or not.”

His advice for future interns? “Ask questions. That’s what’s helped me the most. Also, just being out on job sites, walking around and watching how things get done—it’s completely different from sitting in a classroom. I learn best by doing, and this internship has been perfect for that.”

When he’s not working, John is all about staying active. He loves going to the gym, camping, fly fishing, cooking, and spending time with friends and family. He also has a passion for technology. “I’ve always been great with computers,” he says. “It’s just something that’s come naturally to me.”
