Intern Spotlight: Emily Maines

Building Group Intern – UConn South Campus Infrastructure
Roger Williams University, Construction Management, Class of 2027

Meet Emily Maines, a Construction Management student at Roger Williams University who’s spending her summer interning on the UConn South Campus Infrastructure project. With a projected graduation date of May 2027, Emily is already gaining valuable hands-on experience—and enjoying every step of the way.

One of Emily’s favorite parts of her internship is walking the job site each day to capture GoPro footage and progress photos. “I enjoy being able to see how much progress happens every day and talking to the contractors about the specific work they’re doing,” she says. This daily routine has helped her connect classroom knowledge with real-world applications.

Throughout her time with O&G, Emily has seen just how critical communication is in construction. Whether through meetings, scheduling, emails, or phone calls, she’s witnessed how strong collaboration and clear messaging help keep projects on track. “It’s shown me how essential communication is for building professional relationships and delivering successful outcomes.”

When it comes to what’s helped her grow most during this internship, she says the ability to move between the office and the field has been key: “It’s helped me fully comprehend what I’m learning and see how it all connects.”

Her internship has also helped clarify her ideal career path. “I’ve realized I want a balance of working in the field and in the office,” Emily shares—drawn to both the practical, boots-on-the-ground experience and the behind-the-scenes planning.

Emily was first drawn to O&G after a career fair, where the company stood out for its welcoming, supportive environment and strong reputation for offering interns meaningful learning opportunities. Now, having experienced it firsthand, she knows she wants to continue working in the construction industry. “I enjoy the hands-on aspect of the work—being able to go from reading plans in the office to seeing them come to life out on the site. It really helps me grasp the full scope of a project and understand how all the pieces come together.”

And her advice to future O&G interns? “It may be intimidating at first, but everyone is very nice and eager to help you learn—so make the most of your opportunities.”

When she’s not on site, Emily enjoys skiing of all kinds—downhill, cross-country, and even water skiing.

We’re excited to see where Emily’s drive and passion for the field take her next!
