Intern Spotlight: David Aguilar

Building Group Intern – Hindley, Holmes, and Royle Elementary School Renovations & Additions, Darien
University of Connecticut, Mechanical Engineering, Class of 2027

Meet David Aguilar, a Mechanical Engineering student at the University of Connecticut, who is spending his summer interning with O&G at the Darien HHR project site. David, who expects to graduate in May 2027, joined O&G to gain hands-on experience and explore how his engineering background could intersect with the construction industry.

David’s interest in building and construction was first sparked through volunteer work with his youth group, where he led teams to complete small-scale building projects that made a positive impact in local communities. “That’s what originally got me interested,” he says. “I liked being able to build something that would help people.” When the opportunity at O&G came along, David saw it as a chance to expand on that interest—while also taking a solid step toward his professional future.

While some of his days on site have involved a bit of “busy work,” David has appreciated the learning curve and especially enjoyed collaborating with fellow intern JP on shared assignments. One unexpected skill he’s developed is Excel proficiency: “I use it for almost everything I’m doing. I didn’t expect that, but I know it’ll be useful wherever I go.”

Though his internship has helped him realize construction may not be his long-term path (“I can’t do the porta potties anymore,” he jokes), David is grateful for the clarity. Instead, his passion lies in the tech side of engineering, particularly within aerospace. He’s focused on finding a future in software, hardware, or AI—fields where he can blend his mechanical skills with his love of technology.

He credits Kristopher Soyland, MEP Coordinator, and John Garizio Jr., Project Engineer, as standout mentors during his time at O&G: “They’ve both just been great people to be around,” he says. “I know I can go to them with any questions, and I’m confident they’ll help and guide me to what I need.” Their support and willingness to offer guidance played a big role in shaping David’s experience on site.

David’s advice to future interns? “Whether you know if this industry is for you or not, make the most of it and work hard no matter what. Make a good impression, build connections—and don’t forget to enjoy it.”

Outside of work, David is a dedicated hiker with a goal of summiting all of New Hampshire’s 4000-footers. He’s also building his own PC and stays up to date on the latest computer tech.

We wish David the best as he hikes, builds, and codes his way toward a bright future in tech and engineering!
