Intern Spotlight: Andrew Wright

Building Group Intern – Hotchkiss Dining Commons
University of Connecticut, Civil Engineering, Class of 2027

Andrew Wright, a Civil Engineering student at the University of Connecticut, has been gaining valuable hands-on experience this summer as an intern on the Hotchkiss Dining Hall Renovation project. Andrew reflects on the diverse tasks and learning opportunities that have shaped his time with O&G.

Andrew’s responsibilities have included climate monitoring and management, tracking manpower, updating drawings, and assisting with change orders and submittals. “The most exciting part for me is getting out into the field and seeing how the office work directly impacts the trades’ daily tasks,” he shares.

One surprising and particularly interesting aspect Andrew has encountered is the Request for Information (RFI) process. “I didn’t realize how critical these questions are to keeping the project running smoothly and on schedule,” he says. He’s also gained a new appreciation for the extensive coordination required between various companies to approve changes and materials on-site.

Throughout the summer, Andrew has particularly valued the chance to sit in on project meetings, witnessing firsthand how architects, construction administrators, and trades collaborate to keep the project on track.

Andrew’s experience has only solidified his interest in pursuing a career in construction. “There’s still so much to explore, but this internship has shown me the vast potential and rewarding nature of this field,” he explains. Having grown up in nearby Harwinton, Andrew was naturally drawn to O&G, a company he often saw around town and whose stellar reputation in the industry made it an easy choice for his internship.

His advice for future O&G interns? “Ask as many questions as you can — from both O&G colleagues and trade partners who have a wealth of experience. Take the initiative to ask for work or ways to help so your days stay productive and you can learn more. And when things slow down, spend time reading prints or important documents to deepen your understanding of the project’s challenges and constraints.”

Outside of work, Andrew enjoys fishing, sports, and playing guitar — a perfect balance to his busy internship schedule.
