EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: Giovanna Oliver, Inside Sales Associate, Waterbury Mason

Started: December 2023

How did you get started in the industry?

As soon as I turned 16 and was able to work, I started working part-time after school for a local lumber yard, which became a full-time position once I graduated. I began to love the challenges the industry posed and the problem-solving skills that the industry requires you to use. From then on, I had always looked for a new challenge and, a few years down the line decided to start on a new journey. O&G had a job listing for an Inside Sales Associate, and I am so glad I had taken a shot at starting my career here.

What is the most interesting part of your job, and why?

The saying “You learn something new every day” is more than applicable. Being in such a fast-paced industry, products are always changing, new questions always arise, and your strategies always vary depending on the projects you encounter. Therefore, every day is different and to me, it makes every day exciting since you never know what you will be walking into.

What are you most proud of in your career so far?

I’d have to say the confidence that I have gained working in the industry to properly communicate with customers and confidently give them my opinion or answers to questions.

What are your career goals?

My career goal is to always excel in any stage of my career that I am in, as well as continue to grow myself, and within the company.

What motivates you in your career?

Being a female in a very male-dominated field ignites a fire in me to gather as much knowledge as possible, which allows me to perform the absolute best I can.

What is one thing that you wish people knew about your job?

The position is more than just sales; it’s about educating customers and recommending the right product, helping them come to a solution, and suggesting the right tools needed for the job.

What do you enjoy most about working at O&G? / What makes our culture unique?

Even though O&G is such a large company, there is still a “home-like” feel to coming to work every day. Whether it is the co-workers who become more like family or the employees who you may not see every day, there is a sense of appreciation and gratitude that we all have for each other. In addition, there isn’t one moment where you do not feel appreciated by the company itself. It is great to know you are backed by your workplace as a whole.

What advice do you have for someone wanting to pursue a career in construction?

If you have an interest in the field, do not hesitate to try it out. The industry is immense, and everyone can find something they like to do, whether that be sales, driving a truck, etc. Take on each day with an open mind, focus on your craft, and do what you do best.

Tell us something about yourself!

I am an avid snowmobiler! My parents raised me on a sled and ever since I can remember, I have been racing and trail riding in Pittsburg, New Hampshire.
