Promoted! Chris Cotulio

Congratulations are in order for Chris Cotulio on his new role as Materials Sustainability Specialist for the Materials Division. “This is a title I hold proudly because the environment and sustainability are very important to me. As awareness for climate change and carbon emissions is rapidly growing, so must our response to these issues,” he said.

O&G’s Materials Division recognizes this, which is emphasized by bringing Chris to manage this position. The company has already made advances in concrete mix designs to reduce carbon emissions significantly. We’ve done this by replacing a percentage of cement with a revolutionary material produced by Urban Mining Industries in Beacon Falls called Pozzotive®, made from 100% recycled post-consumer glass. We also monitor and analyze our carbon emissions by generating independent, third-party Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for our concrete mixes. EPDs are the international standard for measuring Global Warming Potential (GWP), commonly called carbon footprint. O&G’s EPDs are generated by Climate Earth (the industry leader in EPD generation) and are certified by the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA).

These advances in sustainability were already part of the process at O&G before Chris was promoted to his new role. “My mission is simply to help the company spread awareness regarding the carbon emissions we’ve already prevented from entering the atmosphere. Additionally, through my own research and advocacy, I plan to help overcome obstacles and break down barriers that are still hindering O&G from using Pozzotive more, which will help prevent even more CO2 from entering the atmosphere,” Chris said.

Despite cement being only 15-20% by weight of an average concrete batch, cement alone accounts for 88% of the CO2 emitted in producing an average concrete mix; cement production is responsible for 7% of the total global CO2 emissions. As a responsible producer of ready-mixed concrete, it is a top priority of O&G to reduce the amount of cement we use in our concrete whenever possible to help preserve the environment.

With this mission in mind, we have been able to replace up to 40% of the cement in our concrete mixes with Pozzotive. The industry standard for GWP (Global Warming Potential) of Pozzotive is a mere 56 kg CO2/ton, meaning for every ton of the material produced, only 56 kg of CO2 is emitted. The GWP of cement is a whopping 922 kg CO2/ton. This means for every ton of Pozzotive that replaces cement in a concrete mix, 866 kg of CO2 is saved from being emitted into the atmosphere. Between January 2022 and December 2023, O&G used over 14,000 tons of Pozzotive in its concrete mixes, saving over 12 million kilograms of CO2 from being emitted. This equates to approximately 26,862,500 lbs, or 6,092 tons of CO2 abated. “It is my mission to spread this message and break down the barriers that would hinder this number. I am committed to helping prevent even more CO2 from being emitted,” Chris explained.

Chris started as a Building Group intern in September 2021. He officially joined the Group as an estimator in December 2021.
