Congratulations to O&G’s Heavy Civil Division and Joint Venture partner, Tutor Perini Corporation, for being named Contractor for the Connecticut River Bridge (CRB) Replacement Project! The $1,037,000,000, six-year project was awarded to the JV team on June 5th.
The original bridge was first built in 1907 and is part of Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor (NEC) rail line between Old Saybrook and Old Lyme, with rail lines also being used by CTRail’s Shore Line East and freight trains.
The CRB project, expected to be completed in 2030, will involve building a two-track, electrified, and resilient movable bridge structure equipped with new track, signal, catenary, power, communication, controls, and security features. The new bridge structure will be built approximately 50 feet to the south of the existing structure to allow for continued service throughout construction, with tie-ins back to the existing tracks approximately 1,000 to 1,500 feet off the bridge structure on each end. The new bridge structure is expected to have a useful life of 100 years. The bridge replacement will allow for better reliability and decreased travel delays due to trains traveling on a more modern infrastructure. Highlights from the project include over 25,000 cubic yards of concrete, over 13 million pounds of structural steel including a 207-foot-long bascule span, over 4 million pounds of reinforcing steel, deep foundation drilled shafts of varying diameters (3’, 4’, 6’, and 8’), catenary work, and demolition of the existing structure upon completion of the new. The joint venture will employ over 150 personnel at its peak, with up to 300 personnel on site, including subcontractors.
The project is funded by Amtrak, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) Program, and CTDOT Partnership Share.
