2024 INTERN SPOTLIGHT: Paul Clement, Plainfield Waste-To-Energy Plant

Union College, Class of 2026, Mechanical Engineering

Tell us about your experience at O&G so far. What are you currently working on?

So far, my experience with O&G has been great. Although my work is not strictly mechanical engineering, it has been exciting to explore the types of work required to complete a project of this nature. I have been an intern for almost a month. During that time, I have created various site maps, evaluated the power draw of the plant, compared turbine proposals, and managed DEEP-related air permitting tasks. In addition, I have contacted suppliers about providing necessary resources for the plant, estimated an ROI for a secondary resource the plant produces, and most recently investigated methods for trucks to deliver municipal waste. Many companies and organizations are involved across different disciplines, and I am grateful to be working among them, contributing to the progress of this project and learning while doing so.

What inspired you to consider an internship with O&G?

I was inspired to apply for an internship with O&G because it was a local company with a team of in-house engineers. Additionally, several members of the O&G community are Union College alumni, and I have been able to meet them and share my college experience. While the engineers work on various projects, the current focus is the renewable energy plant. This past winter, I was able to travel abroad to New Zealand and visit renewable energy facilities around the country. Due to its unique geography, geothermal, hydroelectric, and wind power plants produce over 80% of New Zealand’s annual electricity. This trip inspired me to pursue more work in the renewable energy field. When I discovered O&G was working on a renewable energy project, I thought it was the perfect opportunity.

Are you considering a future career in the construction industry? If so, why? What inspired you?

I am not considering a future career in construction; however, I hope to work in either the energy or automotive industry. Both industries are based on mechanical engineering, and working in the renewable energy industry would be a continuation of the opportunities I have pursued thus far.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation, I hope to work on designing renewable energy facilities or working in the automotive industry. I find the new technology for renewable power production fascinating and hope to apply for positions at the renewable plants in New Zealand. If I do not enter the renewable energy field, I plan to pursue a career in the automotive industry by working here in the US or in countries where large automotive corporations operate, such as Italy or Germany.

Would you like to share something about yourself? A hobby, bucket list item, fun fact?

When I’m not studying mechanical engineering, I’m in the gym, on the ski slopes, or on the golf course.
