2024 INTERN SPOTLIGHT: Matthew Barber, Keeney Elementary School Renovation in Manchester, CT

University of Connecticut, Class of 2025, Civil Engineering

Tell us about your experience at O&G so far. What are you currently working on?
Good! I am working on getting the closeout items from the contractors; I am helping organize the FF&E deliveries, daily reports, weekly OpenSpace walks, site walkthroughs, E&S fence inspections, and other tasks as needed.

What inspired you to consider an internship with O&G?
I have heard positive things about O&G, and if I’m going to become a civil engineer and design structures, I want to get real-world experience in how they are built, what goes into building one, and how it all comes together.

Have you had any other internships? If so, where? What did you do?
Yes, I worked at the Siemons Company as an Engineer Co-op. I would design systems for machines, make and update blueprints, and organize/number existing parts on machines for maintenance and records.

What inspired you to consider a future career in the construction industry?
I know many people who work in construction, and while the industry is tough, it is very rewarding. I have always been interested in building and creating, which this industry is all about.

What are your plans after graduation?
After college, I plan to get a job related to my field and start working on my life goals, like owning a home.

Share something about yourself!
I am a fan of trains, and if I had the space, I would have a model train layout in my home.
