2024 INTERN SPOTLIGHT: Ben Smith, Latimer Lane School, Simsbury

UConn, Class of 2025, Civil Engineering

Tell us about your experience at O&G so far. What are you currently working on?

I am working to get ahead of the closeout process. I have contacted the contractors and am working with them to get the warranties, attic stock, and everything else needed to complete the project closeout. There are also various open submittals, so I am working with the design team and the contractors to close all of those items as we near the end of the project. I have also been taking walks with the superintendent, Scott, to get a sense of how things operate in the field and ask questions to someone with extensive knowledge of the construction process.

What inspired you to consider an internship with O&G?

Being from Torrington, I have heard the O&G name for as long as I can remember. I have several friends whose family members work for O&G and others who have done work with the company as well, and they all have nothing but good things to say about the company and all the employees. During a job fair at Uconn, I saw the O&G booth, and they were very welcoming and easy to talk to, which left a very positive impression on me; this was then emphasized during the interview process and made it very easy to accept a job for this summer.

Have you had any other internships? If so, where? What did you do?

I had another internship last summer working for an engineering consultant based in Portland, CT, called Snyder Civil Engineering. While there, I worked in the field, writing daily reports and inspecting the work as it was getting done. I also spent some time in the office working with some of the personnel on what the pre-bid process looks like for these consultants and what they do with the information provided in the daily reports I had done.

What inspired you to consider a future career in the construction industry?

I have always been interested in building things, ever since I was a kid. I have a few family members in construction, so I’ve always been comfortable with everything. As I got older, I grew to enjoy math and science classes, so civil engineering and the construction industry bring all those things together. While also doing something that helps other people.

What are your plans after graduation?

After graduation, I plan to pass my FE exam if I don’t do so beforehand. Then, I plan to work for a few years and ground myself in the industry before taking the PE exam and earning that credential. I am unsure exactly which part of this industry I plan to pursue fully, but I can hopefully find a place to work that will allow me to gain exposure in several different areas. Outside of my professional career, I want to travel both around the country and around the world.

I have a few items on my bucket list, but the two that are at the top are skydiving and visiting the Grand Canyon—maybe even both at the same time.
