Ithaca College, Class of 2025, Environmental Science
Tell us about your experience at O&G so far. What are you currently working on?
During my time at O&G Industries, I have engaged in a wide range of projects that have expanded my experience. I have had the pleasure of visiting many of O&G’s concrete quarries and asphalt production facilities and have been involved in several pivotal projects.
Working with the Environmental Department, Quality Control, Harwinton Dispatch, and Safety Team, I have contributed to various initiatives. A recent accomplishment includes completing an environmental project that involved planting nitrate-absorbing plants in the settling ponds of both Woodbury Quarry and New Milford Quarry. This project aligns with O&G’s continuous commitment to improving environmental outcomes.
In addition, I have conducted research for the Environmental Department and been involved in Environmental Auditing. Shadowing different projects has also enriched my professional growth. Among these, I have monitored the installation of a CO2 system in Bridgeport, which is designed to regulate water pH levels—a more sustainable option compared to the previously used sulfuric acid.
What inspired you to consider an internship with O&G?
The inspiration to pursue an internship at O&G Industries stemmed from my family’s connection to the company—my father and uncle are employed as concrete mixer drivers. Aware of my interests, my father suggested I apply to O&G, particularly because of the company’s dedicated Environmental Department.
What inspired you to consider a future career in the construction industry?
Honestly, I never envisioned myself working alongside construction workers and managers. However, I have grown fond of my coworkers and everyone I have worked with. As someone who studies Environmental Science, I do not get to learn about construction and construction management. However, working in construction has opened my eyes to the importance of an Environmental Department working alongside the construction team. The Environmental Department oversees crucial permits for further construction projects, helps mitigate accidents that may disrupt the environment, and helps to keep checks and balances in place to ensure that O&G operates in a way that coexists with the environment.
What are your plans after graduation?
After graduation, I’m eager to explore a career in Environmental Science, where my passion for agriculture and food chemistry can thrive. I’m particularly excited about the possibility of working with organizations like the FDA or USDA. Additionally, my recent experiences have sparked a strong interest in the construction industry, where I can apply my environmental expertise to make a tangible impact on our built world.
Share something about yourself!
A little tidbit about me: I’m a fan of running, weightlifting, and pretty much any outdoor activity. In my first year of college, I led my team as the lead runner and even clinched first place in several races. For the past three years, I’ve been dedicated to weightlifting, reaching the milestone of 10 consecutive pull-ups and lifting some impressive weights.
